Providing a Punch Line – A Fun Writing Exercise

It’s fun to take a well-known phrase, one that is crying out for a punch line, and see what you can do with it.

It doesn’t have to be too literal or necessarily even make that much sense, as long as it brings a smile to your face.

Free associate and see where it leads. This exercise aids in loosening up one’s writing style. The following are tag lines to the saying, “She’s been around the block so many times, …”

(1) Her tricks call her Taxi.

(2) She can no longer think outside the block.

(3) She’s known in the trade as “One Way” Sally.

(4) Her sneakers are wearing grooves in the pavement that can be seen from outer space.

(5) “Neighbourhood watch” considers her an asset, but “break and enter” artists just wave hi and bye.

(6) Her pants are falling off. It’s the working and walking girl’s diet.

(7) She’s no longer roadworthy since she failed her emissions test.

(8) Three lemonade stands are surviving on her traffic alone.

(9) Her sway back now hurts when she’s ridden side-saddle.

(10) Her property value has gone into a tail spin.

(11) Her cell phone gets dizzy.

(12) Her pimp’s GPS locks up.

(13) Her e-mail address is “corkscrew.com”.
