My wife can read my mind, which makes it easier for her to steal things from me.

Okay, before I get into big trouble, “steal” is too strong a word. Borrow long-term is a better description.

That includes everything from electronic gizmos to hardware, but it’s items that start with the letter “c” that really concern me – coins, cash, currency and credit cards.

Believe me, I know she only does this for the common good: to buy groceries for us all; to repair the family van; and, most important (according to her), to look good for me.

Hence, the stylists and the clothes shopping sprees, although I have to admit her leanings in that direction are more modest than most.

In fact, she’s been known to abscond with my T-shirts from time to time, a relatively modest side-trip down sartorial-splendour lane.

To be fair, I borrow from her too. No, not dresses or high heels, although I do have my eye on a certain shortie nightie.

If only I didn’t have such knobbly knees.

But the things I borrow from Donna are a little more ethereal.

I borrow her good thoughts. Her wisdom. And her patience.

Clearly, it’s more than a fair bargain. Ours is not just a love that “passeth all understanding”.

Being an economist gives me some special insight into relationships.

Is that stretching the truth a bit?

Economists are known for being super-logical about bond yields, the inflation rate and gross domestic product rather than having insight into emotions.

But hear me out.

More than most, I recognize that spousal theft keeps the home fires of the economy “burning”.

The coming-together of every couple makes an interesting story. The courtship and wedding of Donna and myself is no exception, as set out in Marriage and Multi-tasking.
